Our Story

Peranakan culture reaches as far back as the 15th century. It is a unique fusion of ancient Chinese culture with the local customs of the Straits Settlements. An important aspect of this hybridisation is, undoubtedly, the food.

Nyonya food has survived through the years by being passed down from generations of grandmothers, mothers and daughters.

Each recipe with its blend of ingredients, tips and technique results in food unique to each family and authentic to this part of the world.

Kathryn Ho is Executive Chef and Founder of PeraMakan. She is a fourth generation Nyonya - a descendant of families from Malacca and Penang.

Peranakan food originates from the home and our use of ingredients and cooking methods at the restaurant preserve this quality to this very day.

I see PeraMakan almost as a living museum. It’s a place where we partake in a culture through the cuisine of such rich heritage. It’s my hope to continue this for years to come.”
